Factors affecting healthcare pathways for chronic lung disease management in Vietnam: a qualitative study on patients’ perspectives

Abstract Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma rank among the leading causes of respiratory morbidity, particularly in low- middle-income countries. This qualitative study aimed to explore healthcare pathways patients with chronic disease, factors influencing their ability access Vietnam, where COPD are prevalent. Methods We conducted 41 in-depth interviews patients, including 31 people COPD, eight two asthma-COPD overlap syndrome. Participants were recruited at provincial- or national-level health facilities urban rural provinces Vietnam. The audio-recorded, transcribed, analysed using thematic analysis. Results Patients’ complex involved visits multiple before finally obtaining a definitive diagnosis hospital. Access was affected considerably by participants’ limited knowledge conditions, availability social support, especially from family members, costs as well system (including coverage public insurance, distance facilities, attitude providers). Conclusion demonstrated need for improved timely treatment lung within lower level system. can be achieved enhancing communication skills diagnostic capacity local workers. Health education programmes caregivers will contribute control disease.
